Dr Yein Son

Central to Yein Son's work is the physical analogy between the surface of a painting and bodily skin, its relevant metaphors, and interpretations. In addition to the paintings's materiality and 'skin-like' tactility, she has considered the symbolic value of 'skin' as a medium and painting method. Using psychoanalyst Didier Anzieu's concept of the 'Skin-ego', she has investigated the metaphor of skin as a thin interface between inner and outer. She has extrapolated this to develop a painting practice with a specific haptic visual vocabulary based on layering. Yein now lives and works in Seoul after completing her PhD at Slade School of Fine Art, UCL in 2022.

손예인 작업의 핵심은 그림의 표면과 신체의 피부 사이의 물리적 유사성, 이와 관련된 은유 및 해석이다. 그림의 물성과 '피부와 같은' 촉감 외에도 피부가 갖는 상징적 가치를 매체와 회화 방법론으로 고려해왔다. 특별히 정신분석학자 디디에 앙지외의 '피부자아' 개념을 활용해 내면과 외면 사이의 얇은 경계막으로서 피부의 은유를 고찰하고 다층적으로 탐구해오고 있다. 이를 확장시킨 회화 작업을 통해 물과 안료가 침투해 번져가며 형성한 조형적 표현과 레이어링에 기반한 촉각적인 시각 어휘가 손예인 화법의 주요 특징이라 할 수 있다. 손작가는 UCL 런던대학 슬레이드 미술대학에서 2022년 박사 학위를 취득한 후 현재 서울에 거주하며 국내외 작품활동을 이어가고 있다.
